Pacific Staghorn Sculpin
Leptocottus armatus
Pacific staghorn sculpin, more commonly known as "bullhead", belong in the sculpin family. They are found in saltwater, estuaries and brackish waters along the West coast of North America. They are generally between 4 to 12 inches long, but much bigger fish can be found in the ocean. Residing exclusively on the bottom, they prey on small fish such as juvenile salmon. Anglers can catch them quite easily by using bait, jigs, lures or flies because they will usually bite anything that is placed in front of them. Due to their poor table fare, Pacific staghorn sculpin are generally considered as by-catches and are released by anglers when caught. Because they are such eager biters, this is the perfect species for kids who want to get into fishing.
