Quillback Rockfish
Sebastes maliger
Quillback rockfish is one of several rockfish species found along the coast of British Columbia. Their habitat ranges from the subtidal zone to waters as deep as several hundred feet. Juvenile quillback rockfish live in shallow waters where eelgrass, reefs, kelp beds are found. Larger adult fish are found in deeper water, on the bottom where rocks are found. The average size of adult quillback rockfish can range from 1 to 6lb, but much larger fish can also be found in deeper water.
Quillback rockfish can be caught by jigging in deep water on the bottom, or with baited hooks. In shallower water, they can be caught by casting lures to structures near where they inhabit. Fly fishing is also another great option when fishing close to shore.
